It is a widely used Windows system component that implements database connectivity features. MDAC is required by many Windows programs that implement database features. Windows XP/2000/Me already contain MDAC by default, but it can get broken under certain circumstances. For example, MDAC 2.7 cannot be removed from systems that are running Windows XP, because it is a Windows component and therefore all its assemblies are system-protected files. The same is true for MDAC 2.8 when it runs under Windows Server 2003. The MDAC 2.7 SP1 Refresh release installs the same Data Access core components as Microsoft Windows XP SP1, with the addition of several important bug fixes. The MDAC 2.7 SP1 Refresh release is also included in the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a release. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

Revision 4367 installed MDAC version 2.6 SP2 while revision 4454 installed MDAC version 2.7 SP1, which did not have the problem. MDAC 2.7 was released in October 2001 through Microsoft's website. A refresh release was issued in April 2002 through the release of Windows XP and through Microsoft's website. I have 2 machines, one with Windows 7 64-bit, one with Windows 10 64-bit. Both have Visual Studio 2017 v15.7.5 installed. I have an old application that still uses ADODB (MDAC 2.7). The project compiles and runs perfectly on the Windows 7 machine. MDAC 2.7 Sp1 cannot be installed on this machine Solution. The installation of MDAC (a Windows component) is corrupt. Make sure you have administrator rights; Open the command line console cmd.exe via Start and type cmd in the search field; A black console window opens with the command line; Type following line in this window.

This application note will describe the process for removing MDAC, when the ODBC connection works, but when Spectrum or Satellite won’t connect to a database.

ComCheck

ComCheck or component checker analyzes your system components and diagnoses possible problems. It checks for errors in two places. First, it scans the header information of all the .dll files in the Windows® registry and WindowsSystem file folder to determine if the .dll is the most up to date version. Current versions of many .dll files can be downloaded from the Microsoft® website. Second, it determines the version of MDAC installed. Often, there are program conflicts between different versions of MDAC. To download the version of ComCheck related to this application note, you can go tohttp://www.spcsoftware.com/download/msutils/cc.exe. If you want the newer version of ComCheck, you can get it from Microsoft athttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307255.

First, you need to have the MDAC component checker previous to version 2. To check this, open the component checker and the title bar should not say 2.0.

To remove MDAC, follow the instructions given below. This process will only remove MDAC versions up to 2.6. If MDAC 2.7 is already installed on the system, there is no need to install the redistributable.

The following is from the comcheck readme file:

This section describes how to determine which version of MDAC you are currently running on your computer.

To determine the MDAC version on your computer

1.Run MDAC ComponentChecker.

2.In the ComponentChecker—Choose Analysis Type window, select Perform Analysis of your machine and automatically determine the release version, and clickOK.

The program attempts to identify the MDAC version on your computer, based on versions of the core MDAC files. If a given snapshot of the MDAC files has more matches for one version than for other versions, you receive the following message:

The program then uses the identified version to complete the analysis. If the snapshot identifies more than one version of MDAC on your computer, the program notifies you and asks you to select a version from a drop-down list.

This section describes how to remove MDAC components from your computer.

To remove MDAC components

1.Run MDAC ComponentChecker using the /D command-line option.

2.In the ComponentChecker window, select the build that best matches the one on your computer, and clickOK.

3.When the analysis completes, click Delete or, on the File menu, click Remove MDAC Components.

This produces a warning message asking you to confirm your action.

4.Click Yes to proceed.

If there are components in use that would prevent the successful removal of all MDAC components, you receive an error message telling you so. When you dismiss the message, the in-use components are displayed in the Summary Report view. (See the 'Show Components in Use' section of this document for information about showing in-use components without performing a removal.)

When the program has verified that it can successfully remove the MDAC components, it prompts you for a redistributable .exe file, to be run immediately after the removal has completed. (See the description of the /NR option in the 'Command-Line Options' section of this document for information on how to skip this step.)

5.Specify an .exe file for the Install program for the version of MDAC that you want to use.

The program then removes your MDAC components and runs the redistribution program. When the redistribution program finishes, the ComponentChecker shuts down.

Note The files that the program doesn't remove are listed in the DeleteExceptionList.csv file in the Streams subdirectory in which you installed the program. This is simply a text file that you can edit to customize files that are not removed.
